This guy isn't checking his messages, he's synchronizing his timepiece to the camera

behind him. The cameraman is setting the camera's timer to coincide with the reporter's watch so that if the speaker gives a good soundbite, the reporter will note it and then find it when reviewing the tape. The speaker today is Hillary Clinton and Gov Ed Rendell
